The Woodard Foundation of Miami, Florida has sponsored the INSiiGHTS Academic-Student of the Game for over six years, recognizing over 150 high school and middle school students.
It is even more important that as we continue our battle against Covid-19, that we continue to honor the students that have fought through the pandemic to represent their schools and families in the face of unparalled experiences.
Please take the time to nominate any high school, college or even middle school student that you think is deserving of this recognition.
Allow INSiiGHTS via our popular MicknRick Show to recognize them during our Woodard Awards Component.
VIRTUAL EVENT BY INSiiGHTS
Dr Arthur Woodard 4th Annual Academic Student of the Game Recognition Event
The Woodard Foundation of Miami, FL has recognized over 150 student-athletes selected by their respective high schools for the high level of academic excellence and community involvement. These highly successful student athletes were all participants in the INSiiGHTS High School Game of the Week television productions.
Typically we honor these students with a dinner for them and their families at the home of INSiiGHTS Sports at Studio 13.
Due to covid19 we can not do a dinner but we’re having a virtual reality recognition event Friday 6 pm INSiiGHTS TV on YouTube.
Help us recognize these students in a new event ..... live-streamed virtually.
For the last four years, my family has been honored that the memory of my father has been commemorated via the INSiiGHTS Sports High School Game-of-the-Week Series (GOTW) and the recognition of the student-athlete of the game. INSiiGHTS wanted to honor the student-athletes who excelled on and off the field.
Mickey Clayton, INSiiGHTS President/CEO, wanted to make sure the students who have spent hours preparing themselves for class were recognized. “It takes a lot of hard work to be a stand-out athlete and it takes even more dedication to do it and still be a great student,” said Clayton, who himself was a former head coach at Florida A&M University. “We, at INSiiGHTS wanted to be sure these students are recognized and awarded. We wanted to reinforce and recognize them for their achievements and let them know their hometown community supports them.”
Clayton continued, “who better to name the award after than a man who started his legacy on the tallest of seven hills here in Tallahassee, on the campus of FAMU, than Dr. Arthur Woodard.”
My dad was a Hall of Fame player and coach from the stable of outstanding athletes who excelled academically and athletically for fabled collegiate football coach Alonzo “Jake” Gaither. He retired as the principal of Miami Douglas MacArthur - North Senior High School and left a legacy as a successful educator, athletic director, and coach after his collegiate playing career ended.
My dad believed student-athletes could be successful on the field and in the classroom. He was proud that many of his former students had become doctors, lawyers, college professors, business owners, and skilled artisans.
As a head football coach, he amassed 110 wins, with only 6 losses and 4 ties at then, Tivoli High School in DeFuniak Springs, FL. His teams also had four undefeated seasons. He is enshrined in the Florida A&M University Hall of Fame as well as the Florida High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.
Typically, an awards dinner celebrating the Woodard scholar-athletes, would be held at Studio 13 in Tallahassee. Because of COVID-19, this year's celebration will be presented virtually, at 6 pm ET, Friday, May 8, Live on INSiiGHTS TV on YouTube.
Congratulations to all of the students and their parents. Thank you everyone who played a role in the success of these students. Special thank you's to Coach Mickey Clayton, his wife, Barbara, Ms. Bee and MY Jeremiah.
